Spading

Positive isolations can be created by the positioning of an insert (spade) in-between the two mating faces of the flanges. Various types of isolations can be made, such as the blinding of open flange or the use of a spectacle blind or the use of a spade.

These isolations are rated by size and class, and it is important that we use the isolation in the correct areas. Any incorrect installation can lead to possible loss of system integrity. Before the insertion or swinging a spade, the system must be depressurised and medium free. The same safety precautions apply here as when breaking any flanged joint. Prior to inserting a spade or spectacle blind, new gaskets should be used. It is important to be able to recognise the status of a spade as this indicates whether the line has been isolated or not.
